Célia Bai Lambert Profile
Célia Bai Lambert was born in Mozambique
on 18 February 1978. She lived there four years, enough time for her
to become in her words, “a nostalgic person.” In 1982 her parents
immigrated to Portugal, to avoid a complicated political and social
condition caused by the civil war. But
Célia
never accepted the uprooting. Due to the difficulty of adapting to
her new country she found herself feeling, “a deep sense of rage and
frustration.” In 1996, while still in Portugal, she developed as a self taught artist. Her art embraced a new style based on the use of pure colours and a rapid execution directly mixed on the canvas. This created an expression of forms and colours while negating the academic drawing technique. But the artistic circle wasn’t ready to take any risks on an unknown artist, so she had trouble proving her talent. This disappointment made her pause and reflect on the next step. So in 1999 she took a 2 year sabbatical to travel and explore art in general. She went to Holland, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and finally Switzerland. In Switzerland she spent 3 years at the IFAGE, an institute where she enrolled in drawing and painting classes. But to Celia the experience was catastrophic. The classes left her completely restrained and annoyed. “I couldn’t accept the method of school and the discipline. During my "school term", because of constraints related to the course, I have created works, less personal.” She left school and returned to her artistic desires and the need to reveal feelings through art. Incorporating the fruit of her experiences. Her recent works show her desire to revolutionize the approach to painting, bringing up a unique style that mixes movement, colour and the sensation of a three-dimensional painting in her artwork. Célia tries to capture the vibrations of light and movement through a very personal style.
